Raise the Age - Week of Action 2023
On the 1st of December 2023, all Australian Federal, State and Territory Attorneys-General are coming together to discuss their plans to address the minimum age of criminal responsibility.
Children as young as ten years old sit alone in cages across the country while these politicians come together to decide their fate.
That’s why, in the week before Attorneys-General meet, we’re conducting a Week of Action to demand our politicians #RaiseTheAge to at least 14 urgently and get the youngest children out of prison.
When: Friday 24 November to Friday 1 December 2023
What: Week of Action to tell Attorneys-General that we demand they #RaiseTheAge to at least 14 now
Where: Anywhere!
How: Read on below for the actions
Right now, cruel and degrading treatment and barbaric practices are being inflicted on the most marginalised children in Australia, which is perpetuated by government inaction.
Children who haven't been convicted of a crime are being detained in a maximum security adult prison in Western Australia, Queensland has made it legal to lock kids in adult watchhouses and there are countless tales of children being tortured in solitary confinement for months on end across the country.
10 year old children can’t get a job or join social media but our politicians believe it’s old enough to be locked away in prison.
Let’s use our voices to demand our Attorneys-General #RaiseTheAge to at least 14 now.
Action 1 - Social Media Swarm
For one targeted week (24 November - 1 December) we want to swarm Attorneys-General social media with #RaiseTheAge on Instagram, X (Twitter) and Facebook.
Take a photo of you with #RaiseTheAge written on paper, a big sign or whatever you’ve got close by (get creative!) and tag your State/Territory Attorney-General and Federal Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus.
Tell them that you want them to #RaiseTheAge to at least 14 now, and feel free to add why this is important to you. Make sure you use the #RaiseTheAge hashtag in your caption so we can see your posts!
